    What gives the impression that the British Army has lost standards is videos they put out themselves. Example from yesterday, Forces News put a mini documentary about a deserted Cyprus airport on the green line. Having an obese officer, showing the reporter round the airport whose combat shirt, and trouser do not match, does not give Joe Public confidence. I believe the mini documentary is still on line.

    JLR RAC 74, 4RTR 75-89, other 90-2012. In 74 I could run all day but struggled to do 10 push ups (weighed 7 stone soaking wet with all my kit on) They got me fit and strong by the time I got to 4RTR, where I became the fittest guy in the Regiment (and youngest) although for a very brief time. Always passed BFT and CFT, in addition we did 3/5km runs on a mon wed fri. Played football, basketball. Life in an Armoured Regiment is hard physical work 24/7. On exercise its even more mentally challenging especially for the gunners, after an hour or so your knees feel like they are going to explode, so you can imagine what it feels like after 12-15 or more hours in this position. without being able to take a piss or crap. While in the ground role, it was more interesting and indeed fun, however I did struggle depending on the weight I was carrying at the time. I like the old way of things when someone shouted at you to do something, and it was done instantly without question. You could explain why at a de brief, Armoured soldiers- Infantry soldiers live very different lives and the training are worlds apart.

    Good video, I particularly liked the bit about having less people who joined for the money and maybe added to that could be people joining simply to earn UCAS credit or whatever it is they need for Uni. Notwithstanding the recent news about the video of a recruit being verbally "abused" (some will say motivated), personally I have never considered training to be woke, I can't really imagine what woke training would be like. For myself when I think of the British army being woke I think of it being institutionally woke, that is to say that it has adopted social political ideologies as a central tenet whereas as a military force it ought to avoid involving itself with social politics entirely. This is not at all finger pointing at the men and women who make up the ranks, not at all! This is about pointing fingers at political interference and that would be the elected officials via the most senior officers. Correct me if this is wrong but those most senior officers are more politicians than soldiers, at least that is how they come across. If the British army could clean up its reputation for endearing itself to Crenshaw's ridiculous intersectionality theory and focus instead on keeping our country safe by ensuring those enlisted are the best that we have, then for what it's worth I will throw my hat into the ring and see if I can stand toe to toe. It would be my honour and privilege and the proudest moment of my life. Thanks :)

    Do you know I’ve thought on this a bit, I left in 2014 after 24 years and the tours in between. We have to adapt to our society in order to get willing bodies through the door, however battle or war does not change, the medium and tempo might, but turning someone in to pink mist is still the same. You soon realise fighting in 1812 is the same as fighting in 2024, it’s just the appeasement of the politicians and public that matters.

    Very informative video about the life and breakdown of an infantry platoon. I'm ex Scots guards and I think it's pretty accurate assessment about what to expect in battalion and how it's run at section and platoon level. I found it was the junior nco, s that actually ran the army not the officers, they were only a figurehead of authority and admin. Having a good platoon sergeant was a bonus because I found a lot of them turned jack once they got psbc under their belts. Congratulations on your promotion and posting to Sandhurst by the way. 😊

    I think you would be very shocked how we were trained at the depot in Ballymena in the 1980s, I wouldn't say it was bullying at all but you didn't take something in a crack off a pace stick was expected, same at the battalion. We thought if you couldn't take a "telling off" and a dig, how would you be under fire ? I had a training section commander offer me a trip to the back of the block to teach me a lesson, (which I was about to take him up on, being an experienced boxer before joining) until my corporal stepped in and wised us up. All.our kit was the cheapest and worst crap you wouldn't want to wear as well which didn't help situations sometimes. Love the videos and a proud ex Ranger, by the way you don't look as old as my first colour Sgt Mc Peak, he ended up RSM, top man to

    Served in infantry for 3 years it's the actual training anybody can do it, it's the Muppets you have to work with during and after that make the entire experience of being in military a big no no for me. Some of the Americans were alright and Swedish guys who I met but Brits, are a big no for me, basic soldiers have basic fitness it's nothing special and if you young and fairly fit anyway, you do it eyes closed, it's the Paras, SAS and Marines testing that requires alot of hardwork.

    Geeeeez loads have changed, I done my basic infantry training in Queens Division Bassingbourn in 1986, the instructors had free reign to physcal abuse recruits, they tended to appoint the larger and stronger recruits as stand in to carry out Regimental baths and other intimidation. It was normal and excepted, if you couldn't hack it you simply got out, which loads did. However what I experienced during training did prepare me to what was to come, straight out of training to Northern Ireland in 87,88, 89 and the gulf War in 91 and later the Iraq invasion in 2003 and my final deployment to Afghanistan in 2009.

    At 5:20 if I am understanding you correctly, you now allow training soldiers access to blank ammunition (and presumably other pyrotechnics) when they are not fully familiar with the weapon they are using. Surely that cannot be the case. We had to pass our TOETS (Test of Elementary Training in weapon proficiency) before being given blanks. We were well and truly versed in the use of thunder flashes and smoke grenades and shown how powerful they were and what could happen if used incorrectly. In training any unintentional discharge/negligent discharge was an automatic case of tapping the boards. Just as it would be it was with a live round. There was a reason for this, because it is so serious.

    • @garagenigel
      @garagenigel 2 дня назад

      Are you saying that someone who has passed their "TOETs" is fully familiar with their weapons system? Have you taught recruits? I know and have witnessed soldiers with serious time in the mob that struggle to put the weapon system back together! A nod in basics even at the end of training isn't fully familiar with the weapon system/s

  • @Yorci62
    @Yorci62 6 дней назад

    The thing you have to accept is that society has changed, individuals joining the army now struggle with discipline and their home comforts, they are of a lower quality in terms of physical and mental agility, the standards have been lowered to accommodate the lowering of discipline and standards in the family unit, in schools and society in general. I joined in the 70's, I noticed a serious drop in standards in the 80's and 90's particularly in the mental attitude of the new soldiers, (I'm sure it was the same for the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force). The beasting that you describe was there to teach you right from wrong, to help hone a particular skill, and to act as a deterrent to not be last. The physical punishments made you fitter and stronger, and help you focus down on what you had been taught. Not once was there an instance where someone failed their weapons due to being beasted. Amazingly they passed the next time round. There are too many manby-pambies who struggle to manage discomfort and isolation and as a consequence struggle build teamwork because of it, so leave. The running in boots and webbing with a telegraph pole in wet and cold of winter, helped you deal better with issues on the battle field in the wet and cold of winter. Playing a couple of minutes football in a respirator before going in the CS chamber, taught you to ensure your NBC suit was fitted correctly and to buddy check each other, as the CS on sweaty skin stung. The manner of the training nowadays may have something that contributes to the level of retention being lower than a few decades ago. The mummy's boys who were driven everywhere and had everything done for them, then pampered to their whims when in the army during training, struggle to cope and adapt to the reality when they join their working units or go on taskings. This is where the trainers fail new soldiers massively, they do not prepare them enough for the real word of being in the Army, Royal Navy or Royal Air Force.

    I come from an Army Family way back to 1850 s and i think every generation thinks the new generation is soft My own father joined the Army in 1920 and he was instructed by men who had fought in world war one he was told that they were soft and the army had turned soft But his generation fought world war two ? I served five years short service 1988 to 1993 and we were classed as soft The army is always changing I have one Gong the NI ?? I did not see a war or a Battlefield I look at young veterans today who have Iraq Afgan gongs and think you have been too war and i take my hat off too them A peace time army from 1960s to 2001 is a very different army from 2001 to date Yes i saw some unpleasantness in NI But I was in the UK or in BOAR You need to be better trained today because we have war NOW in Europe But I know the young men and women of today will come up with what is needed because your trained for it Your not woke just a different generation The sad thing is I am the last in my family to serve and in a way I am glad my Son and his Children did not follow me into the Army and I never thought i would say to my son dont join but i did Not becuse i have anything but praise for the Army its because as a workforce your not valued and not taken care of in the way you should be But that is another ball of wax best of luck and thank you for the update

    As someone who did his basic training back in 1972 (Junior Leaders) it is interesting to see how methods have changed. We were beasted daily, inspected to death, verbally abused and debased and basically our lives were made hell! It certainly toughened us up but, as you so rightly point out, a lot of time is lost where the instructors could have mentored instead of shouting for the sake of it. Times change with the generations and I think I would rather have gone through basic today instead of back then!!

    • @Yorci62
      @Yorci62 6 дней назад

      You will always have those who abuse their position of power regardless of the industry, and you will encounter circumstances where one person is stronger than another person who is taken advantage of. This happens in all walks of society, not just the armed services. It takes a strong person to stand up to a bully, and strong friends to stand next to you, shoulder to shoulder. If that happened to you, then I am sorry. I served with some of the toughest units, yes there were some who did a bit of bullying, but the teamwork of those around soon taught them the error of their ways. I am guessing you were not fortunate to have such a team around you. For that it is shameful as the armed services is all about teamwork, especially during adversity. I am sorry for what you went through.

      I joined in 86 at the guards depot Pirbright and the training was tough and designed to whittle out any weaknesses. As if that wasn't bad enough the extra curricular activities when the instructors would have you doing changing parades all through the night in all weather's and then have a room and locker Inspection a few hours later got to a lot of lads. What I didn't like was cruel sadistic instructors who got off on your misery. There was a lot of little Hitlers about in those days and I only hope it's changed now. 😊

      I have sat with this question for a while as it’s a really good one, so thanks for asking. . I think back then we had the why ? You could physically see on the news all the Regiments out on Telic & Herrick so you approached all training with the mindset of this is important. “I’m going to be there”. You could argue that men & women joining today also now once again have that importance from see everything and how it’s developing rapidly in the Middle East & Europe. Definitely I think 2017-22 ish, recruits or newish soldiers potentially lost their Why. They got taught things but potentially were in the mindset of I’ll never use it so who cares. This also had a negative impact on keen motivated individuals who joined up to go on operations and the operations they were deploying on throughout that period, weren’t given them fulfilment.

    I've done the new course in Catterick. There's nothing soft about it. Still got beasted plenty and got a bunch of stupid games at times. Maybe it's not as bad as 10 or 20 years ago. We still got treated poorly for no actual reason at times, and this has also been the case in phase 2. Blanket punishments, both in physical and nonsense form, are also still a thing sometimes. It is what it is and it's done. I just hope it's different in reg

      I went through infantry basic training in the 1980s. I have also seen the current generation of infantry soldiers deployed on combat operations. The combat capability, skillsets and performance of the modern infantry soldier are miles ahead of my generation focussed on North German Plain.

    Great video. I went through in 2009. Definitely loads of beastings. My favourites were, after doing section attacks all day, while cooking scoff. Getting bugged out, full CBRN kit, 4 mile tab. Sweat sloshing about the respirator. Another, changing rooms at 2300, inspection at 0600. What a time. Anyway, done Herrick 15, got out. Good times. Thanks for the videos. Cheers dits.

    Your video content is excellent. As a medically retired RUC officer, I respect you efforts to help those young potential Rangers looking to the Arm ly as a career. I have witnessed how the American Army train their recruits and it is the lowest common denominator. Yelling, screaming and treating the recruit like a robot and creating just that! The British army creates professionals. Salutations from Belfast Northern Ireland 🇬🇧
